Kitzbuhel to Rauher Kopf - Austria 19 Aug 2014.

Kitzbuhel to Rauher Kopf and return
Austria
Distance 19km Climb 900m
Tuesday 19 August 2014

We had never done this walk before and it was one of the tops I had wanted to walk.  We left the Hotel Edelweiss with our packed lunches and set off. We could see Rauher Kopf as we headed through the town, heading north towards Schwarzsee.

They were setting up the Moscow circus near Schwarzsee.

We continued north west towards the golf club, then through towards Reith 762m.  It had been threatening rain on and off.  After a short break at a small hotel for a cup of coffee, we continued west through Reith that took us to a path that passed a shrine on its way up hill towards a forest.

Once in the forest the track twisted and turned in places very steeply to Wirtsalm 1107m. Already the views were opening out.

A further climb through an open area to Scharlwandalm 1213m we were on the Kaiserblickweg a walk marked as a way that you can view the Kaiser Wilder mountains to the north.  Here at Scharlwandalm we sat near the farm and had our sandwich lunches.

The path levelled a little as we continued west on the Kaiserblickweg.  Just passed Hohenangeralm 1303m I turned right south to reach the cross at 1380m.  The path was not marked clearly so it was a little of a scramble to reach it, Anne waited near the junction.

Back on the track we followed the sign around the route, which led to a closed part of the path, so we had to return to the main track which we followed.  It turned out that part of the track had been washed away and we had to go an alternative route.  The new path took a sharp turn left into the trees when we came across a herd of cattle with young bulls.  A couple were walking the other way, I distracted a young bull that was not happy and charged me.  This gave the other couple the chance to get out of the field, they were so relieved.  Anne ran back and would not come back into the field, so we had to find another way round.  This meant walking around, through rough muddy ground before rejoining the route a lot further up and higher up the track.

After the climb there was a slight drop over onto the other side, where part of the track had been washed away. Leaving a very muddy, slippery flooded trail, which in place had been replaced with narrow wooden planks to walk along.

A little twisting and turning and we arrived at the junction that would take us towards the Rauher Kopf.

Further climbing, we passed couples picking berries, in places there was buckets full waiting to be collected. More climbing before the ground levelled off near the top.

As we neared the top we could see down the valley onto Kirchberg.

At the top we took photos of the cross and followed the steep path down the other side.

We continued down the other side until we saw a sign for Schwarzsee then headed back

Passing back near Schwarzsee we could see the circus had progressed further with its setting up, and now we could see camels.

It was then back to the Hotel Edelweiss for tea and cakes.  All in all a very good day walking, we had covered approx 19km with 900m climb.
