Aschau to Kitzbuhel via Kirchberg in Tirol - Austria 12 Aug 2012.

Aschau to Kitzbuhel via Kirchberg in Tirol
Austria
Distance 15.5km
Sunday 12th August 2012

Most days Klaus and Veronika of the Hotel Edelweiss showed a gentle walk on their menu cards and today we had decided to do one of the walks.  After preparing our packed lunches and changing into our walking clothes we set off for the bus.  The bus for Aschau was the 09.44 at the bottom of the Hahnenkamm, next to the train station.  As we were leaving the hotel we saw a black squirrel jumping across the road.

At Aschau it took us a couple of minutes to find the route back.  Anyway once we found it we soon set off, the sun was shinning and although early it was very hot.  The route is North and straight forward, about 2km from the village it drops down next to the river and then follows it into Kirchberg in Tirol.

We found being a Sunday the route was also very popular with cyclists as we passed what appeared to be large groups of cycling clubs.

After passing the bottom of the Gaisberg chair lift we soon arrived in Kirchberg in Tirol 837m.  Most of the cafes and shops where closed so after having a quick look around we started looking for a seat to sit on and have our sandwiches.  This was when Anne saw another snake that just slide passed her a few inches from her foot.  You could have heard the scream in Kitzbuhel.

The snake we saw yesterday although only a few inches long looks bigger on the photo I took of it while the one we saw this day appears smaller in my photo by comparison, this one was a good 2 to 2 1/2 feet long.  It just crossed the road and lay straight in the shadow of some railings.  In the town it must have been something special as even one of the local women had to stop and have a good look at it.

Anyway we found a seat near the church in the shade and had our sandwiches.  This was when I found I had put sugar on my tomato sandwiches instead of salt.  They still tasted nice though and I still ate them.

Soon after finishing our packed lunch we found the track to Kitzbuhel which now followed the river East.  After a couple of km the river turns North and the path now follows the train line East.  The paths are very well marked and clear.  You only need to worry about the cyclists who sometimes think they are the only ones who have the right of way.

It did not take us long to reach the golf course and we followed the path back passed Schwarzsee back into Kitzbuhel,.  The same way we walked the previous Thursday.

As was now becoming the norm and our now usual practice we arrived back at the Hotel Edelweiss for our afternoon tea and cake.

We had walked about 15.5 km with no climb.
