Hahnenkamm to Pengelsteinsee - Kitzbuhel - Austria 10 Aug 2012.

Hahnenkamm Cable Station to Pengelstein-see and Return
Austria
Distance 10km
Friday 10th Aug 2012

Over breakfast at the Hotel Edelweiss, it was decided to have another easy day walking.  We had heard the name Pengelstein from another couple of guests within the hotel and thought we would go and have a look ourselves.  With our pack lunches from the hotel we stopped off to buy the passes we would need for the week.  6 in 14 days, this allowed us 6 days on the cable cars within the two weeks, but for a little extra we included the unlimited bus travel.  It would also save time in queueing at the ticket offices, very good value for money.

The cable car only took a few minutes to get us to the top of Hahnenkamm at 1668m.  The path was clearly marked and wide although in places there are some up and down parts but nothing we found too difficult.  The path takes you below Ehrenbachhohe which has another cable car called the Fleckalm, we would ride on this another day.

We passed Hochbrunn which stands at 1722m and just passed the turn for Steinbergkogel we saw a little house with newly carved wooden chairs at Jufenalm 1872m. It is only approx another km before we reached Pengelstein.

At Pengelstein as we were on our holidays it was decided that we would have a drink and an apple strudel, well being in Austria it is only right.  So we went to the cafe and had a great view looking South at all the hills and mountains.  We also decided that we would take a walk along and have a look at Pengelstein-see.

As we left Pengelstein-see and started back it started to rain, even though it was still very warm.  This was the start of coats on, coats off, coats on again.

It started raining heavy again by the time we reached Steinbergkogel 1972m and found the place closed.  Anyway time was moving on if we wanted to catch the last cable car down into Kitzbuhel.  In a lot of places the signs tell you how long it will take you between places.  In some cases I am not sure if they are a guide or a challenge.

We followed the route back down to the junction and followed the signs back to the Hahnenkamm Cable Station.

We made it back to the cable car with plenty of time to spare and again returned to the Hotel Edelweiss for tea and cake.

In all we had covered approx 10km with a little bit of climb up and down in between.
