IMBROS GORGE WALK
CHANIA
CRETE
DISTANCE APPROX 8KM DESCENT APPROX 600M
10 SEPTEMBER 2024
I had not intended to post this walk, from last year, but having recently completed the Samaria Gorge Walk I thought I would just to compare photos.
We had booked the walk through Thalia Travel, a lovely family run travel agency who helped us plan our first visit to Crete. Kostas was our experienced guide on this walk.
You do need sensible footwear, we found trainers OK. Water, sunscreen and a hat. Kostas lent us a couple of walking poles, which was a help. Although the sides of the Gorge and trees do give some shade. Today the day started a little overcast and I think this helped keep the walk start off cool.
There is a steep short section at the start of the Gorge.
You could hear goats on the top of the sides of the Gorge dislodging loose stones.
Kostas had asked us as a group to wait at certain points along the route to make sure we were all alright and no one was missing.
The toilets are a little basic. Set near what remains of an old deserted village. Part of the history of the area is that British troops escaped capture from the German forces during WWII down and through the Imbros Gorge, although it also says many did not.
As the Gorge opened out you could start to feel the heat in the sun.
At the bottom of the Gorge was our coach, which took us the last few km to the coast where we had a well deserved beer or two in a little taverna. Then it was time for a quick swim in the Libyan Sea before our journey back to our hotels. A lovely walk.
Details correct at time of walking.
